Our Itinerary

Today, many of Europe’s most famous destinations are overwhelmed. Over-tourism has eroded the very charm travelers seek — crowded streets, rushed schedules, and experiences that feel increasingly manufactured.

At Homestead Retreats, we strike a thoughtful balance between structured touring and the freedom to explore. Below you’ll find two categories: experiences included in the Eight-Day Istrian Journey, and optional activities that can be added based on group interests.

Each itinerary is carefully curated after considering guest preferences, pacing, and comfort. No two days feel rushed or repetitive. And each evening, you return home — not to a hotel lobby, but to familiar surroundings.

Day

01

Venice to Istria

Upon arrival in Venice, you’ll meet your tour director for a relaxed, late lunch at a local restaurant. At 5:00 PM, we board the ferry to Rovinj. During the three-hour crossing, your guide will answer questions and introduce the journey ahead as you get to know your fellow travelers.

On arrival, you may choose to explore Rovinj or head directly to the villa to settle in.

Day

02 - 07

Included in The Istrian Experience

A detailed schedule with dates and times will be provided prior to departure.

Motovun & Truffle Tasting

A Truffle‑Topped Day in Historic Motovun

Enjoy a leisurely morning at the villa before heading to Motovun, a walled hilltop town rich in history. Walk through the ancient gates, admire coats of arms and architectural details, and savor a lunch topped with freshly shaved Istrian truffles.

Sunset Serenity on Croatia’s Timeless Coast

Pack your swimwear for a day along Croatia’s stunning coastline. Swim in the Adriatic’s crystal-clear waters before exploring Rovinj’s harbor and cobblestone streets leading to the Church of St. Euphemia. End the day with sunset drinks at the Grand Park Hotel, overlooking the old town.

From Postojna

Travel north to Postojna Cave, the largest show cave in Europe. Ride the underground train deep into the earth, then continue on foot through vast chambers shaped by time, water, and darkness—an unforgettable journey into one of Europe’s great natural marvels. The visit is thoughtfully organized with smooth pathways and a relaxed pace, making the experience both comfortable and awe-inspiring.

To Ljubljana

Enjoy an orientation walk through Ljubljana, Slovenia’s vibrant capital, followed by free time.

Fridays coincide with the Open Kitchen Market, where local and international food stalls, wine, beer, and live music line the riverbanks.

Roman Wonders and Culinary Delights

Begin with a guided tour of the Pula Arena, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheaters. Continue through Pula’s historic center.

Culinary Delights

Meeting our Eat Istria host at the local market in the afternoon, immerse yourself in Istrian cuisine — selecting ingredients, cooking from scratch in a shaded studio among olive trees, and enjoying the meal with local wines.

The Town of Grožnjan

Explore Grožnjan, the celebrated “Town of Artists,” a medieval hilltop village where stone streets carry echoes of a nearly forgotten past. Revived by artists and musicians, Grožnjan now hums with galleries, studios, and music drifting through its winding alleys—an intimate place with a living pulse and a rare, timeless kind of magic.

From Artists’ Lanes to Vineyard Views

Enjoy a wine tasting at the picturesque Kozlović Winery, where modern design meets generations of Istrian winemaking tradition. Discover the region’s signature grapes—crisp Malvazija (white) and bold Teran (red)—as golden light settles over the vineyards. Time slows here, and every sip carries the story of sun, soil, and centuries of patient craft.

Dining in a 500-Year-Old Istrian Mill

One of the region’s most celebrated dining experiences. Chef Nevio Sirotić presents a multi-hour tasting menu in a 500-year-old historic mill. Seasonal, locally sourced dishes focus on pasta, truffles, and slow-roasted meats, paired with wines often made on-site.
